Early Morning Ragas (a vocal recital held at Smriti-Nandan Cultural Centre)
There was an age when Hindustani Classical music in general served more purposes than those of an aesthetic nature, whether they were of a ceremonial or religious nature to name but a few. Yet it was for these reasons that Hindustani Classical music blossomed into one of the most cultivated forms of music history has ever known. However, recent decades have seen a shift away from Hindustani Classical recitals for reasons other than art for art’s sake, leaving out many of the subtleties originally intended by the nature of such music.
Shri. Parameshwar Hegde contributed to reviving the original meaning and purpose of Hindustani Classical music through the ‘Early Morning Ragas’. The recital commenced at 7am – the traditional time of day for this unique performance – on Sunday, 4th June at the Smriti Nandan Cultural Centre, accompanied by Sri. Gopalakrishna Hegde performing Tabla and Sri. Ravindra Katoti performing Harmonium. The audience was captivated to hear the recital.
Since his early years Parameshwar Hegde has arduously trained as a vocalist, having received advanced training from the late Pt. Basavaraj Rajguru, whose art he is today considered a genuine custodian of. His stature as an accomplished musician is reflected in his invitiations to the National Music Programme and the prestigious Radio Sanget Sammelan not to mention regular performances throughout India and concert tours to the U.S., Canada, Britain and the Gulf countries. His most prestigious award is the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 2004.
